After accruing decades of professional experiences, Dr. Nguyen retired from his role as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College, where he also held the post of an adjunct faculty member for the Vietnamese language course. During his time with the Northern Virginia Community College, he has served on various committees, including innovations, textbook reviews, selection and others within the ESL program. Among other things, in his teaching career he was invited to present papers at various institutions mostly on the subject of teaching English to Vietnamese learners. Over the years, Dr. Nguyen also gained valuable expertise through his work as an editor with VOA, where he initiated the “teaching of English on radio” for the Vietnamese Service and produced a weekly “English USA” lesson for broadcast. This made the Vietnamese Service the first service in the EAP Division to put this kind of program on the air. Because of this endeavor, he in a way became the “pioneer” in this field in the Division. Colleagues from the other services came to him for advice and suggestions when they produced their own English teaching programs. Besides, he later helped place the English USA series on Voice of Vietnam.

A member of the TESOL International Association, Dr. Nguyen initially earned a Bachelor of Arts from Miami University. He continued his studies with a Master of Science from Georgetown University. Dr. Nguyen concluded his academic efforts at Georgetown University, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy.

Utilizing his plethora of knowledge, Dr. Nguyen has served as a translator for “Some Wisps of Fragrant Dhamma” and authored a volume of short stories in Vietnamese, titled “An Trua Nghe ke Chuyen Tinh.” He also contributed articles, book reviews and stories to Vietnamese and English publications Iike Van Van Hoc ITL Word bridge, The Writer Post, The Northern Virginia Review, and others. For his outstanding accomplishments, he was presented with the Superior Accomplishment Award and the Merit Increase Award from the VOA, the Asia Foundation Development fellowship from The Asia Foundation and a Leadership Training scholarship from the U.S. Agency for International Development from 1959 until 1964. Looking toward the future, Dr. Nguyen intends to continue enjoying his retirement while at the same time, working on a Vietnamese grammar book in English.
