Dr. Robert G. Grossman received the Albert and Ellen Grass Foundation Prize and Medal from the Society of Neurological Surgeons for continuous commitment to research in the neurosciences.

Dr. Grossman leads an academic practice in medicine specializing in neurosurgery, which he has maintained since 1963. During this time, he also lent his medical expertise to the field of education. From 1973 until 1980, he served as professor and the chair of the division of neurosurgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston before joining the Baylor College of Medicine as professor and chair of the department of neurosurgery for the next 25 years. Dr. Grossman was the founder of the Neurological Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital and served as Director from 2005 until 2013.

Prior to establishing his academic practice, Dr. Grossman completed an internship at the University of Rochester Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, in 1957 and a residency at the Neurological Institute of New York, Presbyterian Hospital – Columbia University between 1960 and 1963 after serving for two years with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Subsequently, he served with the University of Texas Southwest Medical School from 1963 until 1968 and with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine from 1969 until 1973.

Dr. Grossman earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1953 and a Doctor of Medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in 1957. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He maintains professional affiliation with the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Neurological Surgeons, the American Academy of Neurological Surgery and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Grossman authored the textbook “Medical Neurobiology: Neuroanatomical and Neurophysiological Principles Basic to Clinical Neuroscience” with William D. Willis in 1981. He served as the chair of the editorial board for the Journal of Neurosurgery in 1987 – 1989.
He served as chair of the American Board of Neurological Surgery from 1989 – 1990 and chair of the Board of Scientific Counselors, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) from 1989 – 1993.

For excellence in the field of Neurosurgery, Dr. Grossman has been honored with a number of accolades. He received the Albert and Ellen Grass Foundation Prize and Medal from the Society of Neurological Surgeons for continuous commitment to research in the neurosciences. He received the Cushing Medal for service to neurosurgery from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in 2007.
