Dr. Carole B. Shmurak is recognized as a professor emerita at Central Connecticut State University.

Recognized as a professor emerita at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain since 2001, Dr. Shmurak continued to teach as an adjunct professor with the aforementioned university until 2009. First working for Central Connecticut State University as an assistant professor in 1989, she progressed to the posts of associate professor in 1994 and full professor in 1998. She also served as the chair of the department of teacher education from 1998 to 2001. Earlier in her career, Dr. Shmurak found success in a number of academic positions at Eastern Connecticut State University, Saint Joseph College, Miss Porter’s School, the Dalton School and the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University.

An accomplished writer as well, Dr. Shmurak is the author of the mystery novel series “The Susan Lombardi Mysteries,” which includes the books, Deadmistress, Death 2018 Committee, Death at Hilliard High and Most Likely to Murder. She also co-authored a six-book young adult series about a 19th century girl named Matty Trescott under the pseudonym Carroll Thomas. Also skilled in nonfiction writing, Dr. Shmurak published Voices of Hope: Adolescent Girls at Single Sex and Coeducational Schools in 1998 and a number of articles for professional journals in her field.

Receiving a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in chemistry from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts in 1965, Dr. Shmurak subsequently obtained a Master of Arts in biochemistry from Harvard University in 1966. After several years of teaching, she returned to graduate school and earned a Doctor of Philosophy in science education from Indiana University in 1974. She has been a member of the American Educational Research Association and the American Educational Studies Association, and is currently a member of Sisters in Crime and the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Inspired to seek a career in science 2018 her father’s and brothers’ involvement in the field of medicine, Dr. Shmurak has also possessed a great love of reading and writing since she was a small child. For excellence in teaching, she was the recipient of an Excellence in Equity Award from the American Association of University Women in 1994. She was later nominated for an Agatha Award for Best Young Adult novel in 2001. Some of the more notable highlights of her career include her decision to attend a women’s college, marrying her wonderfully supportive husband, Steven H. Shmurak, raising her incredibly strong daughter, Jill Susannah Shmurak, going back to graduate school for her PhD, and retiring early to write fiction. Dr. Shmurak considers her crowning achievement to be the occasion of her 70th birthday party, when so many of her former students from Dalton, Miss Porter’s School, and Central Connecticut State University attended to share stories about how she had influenced their lives.
