Once we had extracted XnViewMP files, we launched the Startup Wizard that allowed us to make a number of configurations, including:
- Adding the program to context menu
- Running the file association tool
- Choosing folders for Database (.db), Thumbnails Database and other files
- Choosing whether to use .ini file in folder or Windows Registry
When we clicked the OK button, the program automatically opened the Pictures directory and displayed thumbnails of available images. We could choose one of the preset thumbnail sizes or set our custom size.
We had the option to choose different ways of viewing our images in the stylish interface, including film strip, full screen and thumbnail viewing modes. In addition to viewing images, we could also perform such basic editing functions as cropping, enhancing color, changing contrast and applying filters and effects. We just needed to double click on images to open them in the editor, from where we could move to either previous or next images.
Clicking the Properties button displayed comprehensive details about file, image and color profile. We could also view the histogram and ExifTool for more information.
The program also captures screen shots of the desktop, active window, selected window or rectangle. We were able to set delay period in seconds or use a hotkey to capture the selected section, and the program immediately displayed the result in the editor.
The free image converter allowed us to convert either single files or a batch of images simultaneously. The ability to work with many files helps in saving time when organizing images. The program also allows you to save time due to its fast performance and caching ability.
The Explorer type of navigation made it easy to access files in different locations. Apart from organizing image files, the program allowed us to preview some videos on the lower middle section of the program interface. We could also view text files in the same place when we clicked on them. Double clicking files opened them in their native applications.
In addition to saving individual files, the program allows you to save your session before exiting.
